New Ulm Oktoberfest

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

 

PARADE

Vickie Denyer, parade chairman, has planned a route through downtown New Ulm beginning at 10:30 a.m. and all entries from floats to horses, etc. are welcome. Since this is a start-up year again for the parade, possibly there will be no prizes offered, only participation ribbons. Contact her at 979-732-3792 or 281-851-9086 for more information.

 

FOOD

Food during the noon hour will be available at Firemen’s Park with booths by Texas Star Cafe offering German food and J&J Pavilion offering barbecue sandwiches, kolaches and small pies. Also, the St. John Lutheran Church WELCA will have their Bake Sale. 

The New Ulm VFD will host a biergarten and a concession stand will be open for two hours during the baseball game. 

Texas Star Cafe will also be open downtown beginning at 5 p.m. that day.

J & J Pavilion in downtown New Ulm will be open their regular business hours that day, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 

MUSIC

Music During the day by New Ulm Oompah Band plus German Winedale Singers and Unsere Deutschen Saenger from Colorado County.

 

COOK-OFF

A Cook-Off chaired by Glen and Vicki Spiess is planned with $25 entry fee per category of Chef’s Choice, Beans and Chili. Overall champion will receive a trophy and prize money. First-third place in each category will be awarded a trophy.

A Bloody Mary Contest will also be part of the festivities with an entry fee of $10. 

Teams will set up between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 with each team having a space of approximately 20 x 20. 

Judging times will be as follows: Bloody Mary 11 a.m.; Chef’s Choice 1 p.m.; Beans 2 p.m. and Chili 3 p.m. Results will be announced after the baseball game on the field.

 MAYOR’S RACE

“The race is on for the Honorary Mayor of New Ulm,” announces  Chairman Tom Sherman. 

So far, Robert Neumann, Delphine Merkel, Franklin Graham and Johnnie Shupak have agreed to run.

The race will have more candidates next week. Please stay tuned for the latest candidate.

Proceeds from this election will go to New Ulm Chamber of Commerce community fund. Your dollar is your vote.

 

BASEBALL GAME / BASEBALL REUNION

A reunion of all past New Ulm Firemen team members will be held at the park that day with a number of them participating in a game against a vintage team from the Houston area. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
